Ibsen & Gilman/Women's Place in Society
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page essay that contrasts and compares the narratives of Henrik Ibsen's play A Doll's House and Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper." The writer argues that these works portray the subjugated position of women under nineteenth century patriarchy, and that a close reading of these works reveals not only that the female protagonist in each work feels compelled to rebel against the social restrictions that circumscribe their lives, but that the patriarchal framework of society serves, in general, to keep husbands and wives alienated from one another, preventing the true intimacy that is the bedrock of a successful marriage. Ibsen Meets Euripides (Nora and Medea)
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp). Remember some old saying that you heard as a kid: The more things change, the more they stay the same. As a kid the phrase did not make a lot of sense, and by the time you were an adult, you did not want it to be true, let alone make sense. There is that same thread of commonality in both of the female "heroes," in this discussion: society has determined what their roles are and how long they are to enact them. Enter Nora and Medea, who both prove to have minds of their own. Bibliography lists 2 sources)

Identity Formation for Girls
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay on 3 narratives. There is a bond between mothers and daughters that is typically more intense throughout the lifespan. Early in life, boys differentiate themselves from identification with their mothers and turn to their fathers for an adult male role model, but a daughter's focus remains with her mother and the maternal bond never slackens but tends to intensify. Therefore, the processes involved in identity formation for girls are intimately connected to their relationships with their mothers. This factor is evident in three contemporary perspectives, which present narratives of female identity formation. In particular, in Isabel Allende's short story, "Wicked Girl," Louise Erdich's novel The Antelope Wife, and in the film "Real Women Have Curves," the narrative focuses on how differences between the generations complicate this process in young girls/women. Illuminating Sympathy in Middlemarch
[ send me this paper ]
We form intimacy with characters because we recognize the characters feelings and responses in ourselves. Middlemarch begins with the idealism of youth – that common search for good, the desire to be heralded for creating good in the lives of others around us, creating our sympathetic entry into the story. Dorothea, how she interacts with her other cast members and lives life, exemplifies what is sympathetic in Middlemarch.... Bibliography lists 2 sources. jvMidlmr.rtf

Importance of Women's Voices
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page research paper that examines various aspects of "women's studies" and argues their importance and relevance. The writer argues that patriarchal structures of power are still entrenched and women's experience in much of the world remains that of a second class citizen. An examination of the feminist theory and literature demonstrates the importance of the topic known as "women's studies" and why the issue of gender equality is far from resolved. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
