Ethical Theory in Sports Journalism
[ send me this paper ]
A 22 page paper discussing the philosophies underlying the solid and accepted principles of journalism, particularly as they relate to any sort of conflict of interest arising from simultaneous corporate ownership of reporting organizations and performing organizations. The paper discusses the philosophies of Kant, Mill, Aristotle and Rawls, relating them to the growing problems of such conflict of interest enabled in large part by the consolidation trend fueling mergers and acquisitions. The second and smaller section of the paper provides concrete example of the problems of subjectivity in reporting. It provides several examples of broadcast 'cheerleading' styles dating from as far back as the 1960s and examines the implications of the 1999 purchase by the corporate parent of the Dallas Morning News of a minor stake in Dallas' struggling rofessional basketball team, the Mavericks. Are Baseball Players Paid More Than They are Worth?
[ send me this paper ]
This paper evaluates the question of a player’s worth from the perspective that this is a capitalist country and that baseball is big business and it pays its players what it is assumed they are worth. In other words baseball salaries are a product of supply and demand. The very fact that baseball players are paid such tremendously high salaries supports the contention that they are paid what they are worth. The author also looks to the open market to evaluate the price of baseball paraphernalia such as logo clothing and even collector cards in order to substantiate player worth. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
