Improving Pediatric Care in the ED
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page research paper that discusses using Patricia Benner's novice to expert nursing theory within the context of a hospital Emergency Department (ED), which is one of the most stressful nursing environments and one that is particularly traumatic for children needing emergency care. In response to the need to recruit and retain ED nurses, while providing a high level of nursing care, the ED clinical educator at Poudre Valley Hospital located in Fort Collins, Colorado, devised a six-month orientation program that uses Benner's model as its theoretical framework in order to aid "new graduate nurses" and "promote clinical competency in emergency nursing," while enhancing professional socialization (Truman, 2004, p. 45). The writer discusses this program. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Incontinence & Dependency Issues in Elder Care
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page research paper that addresses issues involving incontinence and dependency associated with elder care. While it is natural that there is a decline in abilities as individuals go through life, many commonly held beliefs about aging are grossly inaccurate and perpetuate unnecessary suffering for elder citizens. These misconceptions concern physical capabilities, but also influence whether or not older people remain active and engaged in life or become overly dependent on others. Research shows that the dependency that elders develop is sometimes out of proportion to their actual physical capabilities. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Incontinence In The Elderly
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page paper that includes an introduction, purpose of study, literature review, theoretical framework and conclusion. Reports of the incidence of urinary incontinence differ greatly, depending on the ages included and the definition of incontinence. What is certain is that at least half the older residents in nursing homes suffer from this condition. The different types of incontinence are described. Different interventions that have significantly decreased the incidence are discussed. Statistical data include the incidence and the annual costs related to this condition. This is a problem that some authors call underdiagnosed and undertreated. There are many interventions that can dramatically decrease incontinence and provide the older adult and the elderly person with greater quality of life. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Increasing Nursing Involvement in Pain Management
[ send me this paper ]
A 19 page paper divided into 14.5 pages of text and 4.5 pages of annotated bibliography discussing augmenting the nurse's role in pain management among the elderly within the nursing home setting. Pain among the elderly has been seen more as an unfortunate fact of life in the past, but current approaches to pain management and pain education appear to be beneficial, leading to less dependence on pharmaceuticals and less cost to the elderly as a result. When combined with a higher quality of life, nondrug pain management appears to be worthwhile. The Harvard-style annotated bibliography lists 13 sources.
