“Afrocentric Escapism”: A Review of an Article by Commentator Thomas Sowell
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page review of an article published in the April 14, 1995 edition of “The Washington Times” entitled “Afrocentric Escapism”. Sowell explores what he perceives as the creation of false history and tradition in the African American community. Sowell explains this practice as having evolved out of the dire need to escape the multitude of very real problems which are confronting the community. While the solution to such problems lies in education and the acquisition of job skills, those who are recreating the so-called black experience are instead focusing the attention of their young followers on the problems of the past. Includes many insights on the misperceptions of slavery itself. No additional sources are listed.

“The Secret Sharer”: Character Analysis of Joseph Conrad’s Captain and Leggatt in this Late Nineteenth Century Sea Novel
[ send me this paper ]
The author of this paper asserts that despite Conrad’s continued emphasis of the similarities between the captain and Leggatt, these characters are really more complimentary than similar. The conclusion is reached that both their fates and their backgrounds are completely disparate. Even the manners in which the captain and Leggatt acknowledge their own weaknesses are more complimentary of each other than they are similar. Leggatt has learned to live with his shortcomings, even to come to terms with himself. The captain, on the other hand, is almost always in a perpetual state of self doubt. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

A 3 page review of this June 2004 article by Lisa Rapaport published in "The Bee". The author highlights the main points presented in the article and emphasizes that is useful not only in detailing the Supreme Court ruling but also in outlining the set of circumstances under which it occurred. It is just as useful, however, in the fact that it assesses what the ruling could mean to Americans.

"National Geographic": Political Propaganda or Insight into the Exotic and Fascinating?
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page discussion of the criticism that has been waged by some authors against "National Geographic". Analyzing those criticisms and evaluating them against one specific article in particular this paper concludes that "National Geographic" is not a political publication and it is not intended to be. The publication's "images are formed, selected and controlled, purveyed and read" (as one author has contended) all right but they are presented for the specific purpose of giving us a view of the exotic and the interesting not the political and controversial. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
